Clutter is what happens when you own too many things or try to fit too many possessions in a small space. It fills closets, overloads shelves and spills out of drawers robbing you of precious time and making you feel helpless. Research shows that in your lifetime you will spend approximately 153 days looking for misplaced items that are lost in your clutter. You also spend extra time cleaning your home. According to the National Soap and Detergent Association, getting rid of your clutter will save you 40 percent on cleaning time. Isn’t it time you declutter your home and regain some of that wasted time and energy? Follow these tips for getting the job done.
Start Small
Identify the area that causes you the most headaches and start with that. This may be the hall closet, your kitchen cabinets or the entire family room. Working on one area of the home at a time will help you focus and keep you on track. Trying to overhaul your entire house at one time can quickly become overwhelming. Breaking your mission to declutter your home into manageable steps will increase your likelihood of finishing the job and will build your confidence, too.
Evaluate First
Avoid the temptation to simply buy more buckets and bins to organize your existing possessions. While there is a time and place for using organizational tools, jumping right to that will likely result in moving your clutter around so that it looks better temporarily, but it won’t help you in the long run. In fact, stuffing everything into neat little trays and cute little bins may even make matters worse, as you will need to rummage through more spaces to find the item you are looking for. Take the time to assess and evaluate your household and personal belongings and decide which items will stay and which can go.
Sort Items
Sorting your items into piles (or boxes) labeled keep, give away and trash is a great way to whittle down your possessions to a manageable amount. You may wish to add other categories within the give away pile, such as sell and donate. The important part is that you know the items in this pile will find a new home and will no longer be part of your clutter.
Get It Out
Removing unwanted or unused items from the home will give you room to get down to the liberating work of putting everything away. Donate, give away or sell usable items and throw out the trash. If you are decluttering an entire home consider renting a dumpster to make things easier.
Organize
Finding a place for everything shouldn’t be hard if you have done your job wisely. If you are struggling to find the appropriate place for any of your belongings, you may need to re-evaluate whether you need them at all.
